Human-induced earthquakes and Energy

In some cases, hydrocarbon and geothermal heat extraction processes cause earthquakes. Listening to various settings where these occur clearly conveys the differences between human-induced and tectonic earthquakes, and raises many interesting societal questions.

Wastewater from shale gas extraction by “fracking” is toxic enough that most states will not allow it to be stored or disposed of in-state. Oklahoma and Ohio permitted wastewater to be injected deep in the ground. The injection occurs at high pressure so that the fluid flow deep into some deep layer in the crust and will stay.

However, the fluid encountered some old faults that haven’t moved in millions of years. The pressurized fluid reactivates these old faults and causes earthquakes where there hadn’t been in our recorded history:

While the earthquakes induced from injection of shale-gas extraction wastewater in Oklahoma are dangerous, the potentially much greater health risk comes from the toxicity of the injected fluids leaking into aquifers.Because this concern is more abstract and uncertain than earthquakes, it is effective for opponents to focus on the earthquakes.

However, the extraction of geothermal energy, a CO2-free resource, also produces earthquakes, but with minimal risk of groundwater contamination, and the scale is far smaller, in area and magnitude.
